Shimane University
Matsue City / Izumo City, Japan
Inspiring young minds for greatness‚
Experience and get to know deep Japan‚
Peaceful environment for greater education
"Shimane University was established as a national university in 1949 and is celebrating its 71st anniversary this year. Shimane University’s goal is to enable students to develop international perspectives and their ability to become leaders in each region of the world. Students become equipped with the ability to cope with diverse problems like those they encounter in modern society.
Currently, there are more than 200 international students from various countries, and they are working hard to master their specialized fields. Studying alongside Japanese and international friends, students enrolled in Shimane University also learn Japanese traditions and culture. Through studying and living in a more traditional area of Japan, many students come to feel a connection with the abundant nature, rich history, and time-honored culture.
Shimane University has continued to expand since its inception and currently consists of six faculties across two campuses. Matsue Campus is home to the Faculty of Law and Literature, Education, Human Sciences, the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Materials, for Energy and Life and Environmental Science. Graduate faculties include the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, and Natural Science and Technology. Izumo Campus comprises the Faculty of Medicine and the Graduate School of Medical Research.
Destacados
Scholarships: There are many private scholarships for international students as well as scholarships from MEXT (Japanese government).
Career Support: Job hunting support for international students is carried out collaboratively by the Career Section of the Higher Education Center and the Center for International Exchanges. Job hunting counseling sessions specifically for international students are held monthly. Shimane University also arranges internships at local companies in collaboration with the local government and economic organizations.
Japanese Language Classes: Shimane University offers elementary, intermediate and advanced level Japanese language courses and Japanese Culture Studies courses for international students. These classes are officially recognized and provide academic credits upon completion.
Dormitory: The student dormitory for Matsue Campus is a 10-minute walk from the university. All rooms are equipped with a bed, desk, chair, closet, air conditioner, and interconnections for a TV and Internet.
Tutor Support: When international students arrive in Shimane Prefecture, they are assigned Japanese student tutors who help them with daily tasks and support them in getting acclimated to life in Japan. This includes activities such as registering at various institutions, support with study methods and how to take classes, general advice on everyday life, and more.
Living Costs & Everyday Life: Shimane University students escape the high living costs of say Tokyo or Kyoto by studying in the countryside. Everything you need is within a 10-15 minute walk of campus: housing options, convenience stores, supermarkets, hospitals/clinics, restaurants, and more. Overall, the cost of living is much lower than that of hub cities. However, Matsue is big enough that it is easy to catch public transportation to larger cities such as Osaka.
Safety: Both Matsue Campus and Izumo Campus are in smaller cities in the countryside of traditional Japan. With this comes the close-knit community and relaxed atmosphere of enjoying a slower-paced lifestyle.
